The ultimate ROAD TRIP guide to CHANIA (2026)

If there is a place in Greece that was created for driving and exploration enthusiasts, it is undoubtedly Crete. In this article, we present you with the best routes for 2026 for the prefecture of Chania and give you all the necessary tips for a safe and unforgettable trip.

  1. From North to South: The Chania – Paleochora Route

Starting from Chania heading southwest, the approximately 70 kilometer route offers a unique change of scenery that will make you stop for photos at every turn.

Leaving the national road behind and turning towards Tavronitis, the road begins to climb gently. Here the landscape is dominated by vast olive groves and small, picturesque villages. The atmosphere changes, the pace slows down and the smell of sage and thyme begins to waft through the car window.

As you approach the area of Kantanos, the road becomes more demanding but also more impressive. You will cross lush green areas and see the imposing slopes of the White Mountains rising around you.

Must-stop: Stop in historic Kantanos for a traditional coffee under the plane trees of the square. It's the moment to experience Cretan hospitality in its purest form.

After Kandanos, the road begins to descend. At a certain bend, the vast blue of the South Cretan Sea will suddenly appear before you. The descent towards Paleochora is enchanting, with the landscape becoming drier and "southern", reminiscent of the wild beauty of Africa.

Paleochora, built on a peninsula, welcomes you surrounded by the sea. Whether you choose its sandy beach (Pachia Ammos) or the pebbled one (Chalikia), the crystal clear waters will make up for the journey.

  1. Exploring Chania: From the Tradition of Vamos to the Wild Beauty of Akrotiri

If you want to experience the diversity of Chania in just one day, this route is the ideal choice. Starting from the eastern side of the city, you will tour historic villages and end up at some of the most emblematic beaches and monasteries of the island.

First stop is Vamos , the historical capital of Apokoronas. It is a village that has preserved its architectural identity with impressively restored mansions. Walk along the stone cobblestone streets, visit the old olive press and enjoy a Greek coffee in the square, under the shade of the trees. Vamos exudes a tranquility that makes you forget that you are just a few kilometers away from the city.

As you drive from Vamos towards the sea, you will pass through lush green hills with views of the snow-capped (until spring) peaks of the White Mountains. It is a route full of colors and aromas of the Cretan land.

Continuing your journey towards Akrotiri, the landscape changes and becomes wilder and more imposing.

Monastery of the Holy Trinity of Tzagarolon: A stop here is a must. This is one of the most impressive monasteries in Crete with unique architecture. Don't forget to try the organic oil and wine produced by the monks themselves.

Seitan Limania: A little further on, the road descends with sharp bends towards one of the most famous Instagram beaches. A narrow, blue bay between huge rocks that looks like a work of art.

End your journey at the final resting place of Eleftherios Venizelos, at the Venizelos Tombs. From here, the view of the city of Chania and the Venetian Harbor at sunset is simply unbeatable.

  1. Road Trip to Sfakia: The Power of the White Mountains and the Serenity of the South Cretan Sea

This route starts from the mountain pass and ends at historic castles and isolated plateaus.

The entrance to Sfakia is via the Askifos plateau. As you descend, you will come across the entrance to the Imbros Gorge. Even if you don’t walk it, driving around the bends above the gorge offers breathtaking panoramic views. It’s the moment you realize how imposing the mountains of Crete are.

Descending, you will reach Chora Sfakion. It is the main port of the area, built between rocks. Must-do: Enjoy a traditional Sfakian pie with honey at the port and feel the energy of this proud place before continuing to the heights.

Leave the sea for a while and follow the uphill road with the continuous bends ( serpentines ) towards Anopolis .

Shortly after Anopolis, you will find yourself at the Aradena Bridge , the highest bridge for bungee jumping in Greece (138 meters high). The sight of the gorge that ends in the sea (Marmara beach) is the ultimate "mountain and sea" shot.

Returning to the coastal road and driving east, you will end up at Frangokastello. An impressive Venetian castle built right on a beautiful sandy beach, with the mountains rising majestically just behind. It is the place where the legend of the “ Drosoulites ” meets the blue of the South Cretan Sea.
