The beach of Agia Marina is one of the busiest and most popular beaches of Crete. It is located just 9 km west of Chania. It is a very beautiful, 2.5 km beach with fine sand. The waters are shallow, warm and safe for small children. It borders the beaches of Kato Stalos and Platanias and together they form a single tourist resort.
The beach is organized with many amenities, water sports, such as water skiing, wind surfing, sup, crazy sofa, parachute, water bike, etc. There are beach volleyball courts, as well. The largest hotels of the prefecture of Chania operate in Agia Marina, and there are all kinds of tourist infrastructures. There are many beach bars around the beach and the clubs in the area are a magnet for those who love nightlife. Tourists, residents of Chania and residents of the surrounding areas come here for entertainment.
Off the beach of Agia Marina, there is the islet of Agios Theodoros or Theodorou. The fort that was built on the island during the Venetian rule and the church of Agioi Theodoroi gave their name to the island. The island is part of the NATURA 2000 network because it is a refuge for the Cretan goat (capra aegagrus cretica) or kri-kri and it is only visitable once a year, on the Day of Saint Theodore.
There are many cozy tavernas on the beach of Agia Marina and in the village and they offer a wide variety of good food from traditional Greek cuisine, seafood, Italian cuisine, barbecue, fast food to sushi. The service they provide is of high quality and the food is prepared with fresh ingredients.
Agia Marina is a popular destination, both for its beach and for its clubs and taverns. Chania is very close and visitors easily combine a visit to the city.
